I would drain it and then remove the tank. This way you can control spills/drips better. Also would give you a chance to do other service like the coolant, synch the carbs, etc. if needed. But thats me. If I remember right, I had loosen the rear tank mountng to raise it up enough to remove the petcock due to clearance issues.
