Top level dirt, and down a few blocks - you'll get Tier 1 dirt. After that, you'll reach Tier 2 dirt - you'll know you've reached it, if you're still using T1 tools they'll just "clang" on the dirt and you won't be able to dig it. If you want to dig T2 dirt, you'll need to upgrade your tools / machines.

First of all, if you're going to run ANY T2 Drills, you're going to want Cloutium Pipes. A Cloutium Intake Pipe exceeds the max water pressure for Iron Pipe and T1 Equipment.
